A review of the Run 1 diboson excesses at the LHC

Both ATLAS and CMS have possibly seen hints of a new 2 TeV particle decaying to two bosons (a boson meaning W, Z or H); the most striking is a bump, apparently of 3.4 sigma local significance, released by ATLAS in June 2015. I will first review the experimental evidence, before discussing what it would imply for the putative particle’s properties. I will then review the models in the literature that could explain its origins. In a couple of months’ time, this topic will become either terribly exciting or rather moot, as by then the LHC experiments should have collected enough Run 2 data to corroborate or refute the existence of such a 2 TeV resonance.
