Paul Ginsborg on “Recent Italian Politics in Historical Perspective”

Thursday, 12 November, at 5pm in the Munro room.

Italy as a democracy has nearly always seemed on the brink of collapse, overwhelmed by all sorts of malaise – regional differences, corruption, criminal organizations, populist leaders and so on. Much of this negative view is undeniable, but it is also somewhat myopic. If we put recent Italian politics and society into long term historical perspective, the overall picture becomes a much more complex and interesting one, with Italy emerging as a country of conflicting tendencies, not all of which are negative.
