Urban Climate Risks Under Global Warming

With global warming continuing, cities are under more severe threats from weather hazards. Because many of the infrastructures in cities were built decades ago and the increased climate risks associated with global warming have not been taken into consideration, cities have become more vulnerable, which have severe consequences in terms of casualties and property losses.

In this talk, evidence will be presented on how the risks associated with different types of weather hazards have increased during the past few decades. These include heat waves, enhanced rainfall amount and rainfall intensity, and sea-level rise. Examples of what have been done in some cities to mitigate the impacts from these risks will also be given.
