Abstract
I will first review how the dynamics of a closed string in the presence of a stack of parallel D-branes is neatly described, in a suitable range of parameters, by an eikonal operator that encodes both classical gravity effects (deflection angle, time delay) and stringy corrections (tidal excitations of the string).
I will then focus on the region of parameters where the absorption of the closed string becomes the dominant effect. I will derive a compact and explicit expression for the quantum state of the open string created at tree level on the branes worldvolume. I will discuss some properties of this state (angular momentum, longitudinal and transverse extension) and compare them with the properties of the corresponding semiclassical solution that describes the closed-open transition.
