Democratic values are under siege in Eastern Europe a quarter century after the fall of the Berlin Wall. A series of political, economic and social tidal waves threaten democratic structures built during the post-Cold War transition period. The financial and economic crises, terrorism, Russian aggression in Ukraine, the flood of refugees and migrants from the Middle East and North Africa, and the consequent politics of fear have combined to give rise to new forms of “illiberal democracy” in Hungary and Poland, and nationalist parties and movements across Europe that oppose liberal democratic values. An American who has lived for many years in Budapest offers an assessment of these developments, and a comparison with current political trends in the US.
