Abstract
The application of mathematics and science to warfare has taken place throughout history. This application came to prominence within the UK during World War II, and was an essential element in the eventual Allied victory. During the war it came to be called Military Operation Research (OR), or later within the MoD as Operational Analysis (OA). The methods used are effectively quantitative common sense, and they have been further developed and applied in academia, industry and government. This talk will give an overview of OR/OA applied to the Battle of the Atlantic, the Battle of Britain and a few more recent examples taken from the author’s career within the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). In addition, it will include a resume of Dstl’s purpose and career opportunities.
