Abstract
There has been a recent shift in the evolutionary behavioural sciences towards the view that parenting in our species is cooperative, and that mothers require help from others to raise children successfully. This talk will present evidence to support this hypothesis that our reproduction requires cooperation. It will then consider the implications of this cooperative system of reproduction for fertility – do women have more children in the presence of helpful family members? Empirical evidence from across the world will be brought to bear on this question.
