Galaxy Clusters as Tele-ALP-scopes

Abstract
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are a conjectured Beyond-the-Standard-Model particle with good theoretical motivation. They are characterised by interconversion of photons and ALPs in astrophysical magnetic fields. At X-ray energies galaxy clusters are the most efficient interconvertors of axion-like particles to photons in the universe. I discuss the physics and phenomenology of ALPs, in particular within galaxy clusters, and describe their astrophysical implications in relation to two topics: the recently observed 3.5 keV line and the use of small-scale structure within the X-ray thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum of galaxy clusters to search for/constrain ALPs.
