Abstract
Graphics statics is a product of the 19th century, growing from the classic works of Maxwell, Cremona and Rankine. Nowadays it is rarely taught outside architecture departments, with finite elements having long supplanted it in engineering. The subject is, however, presently undergoing something of a Renaissance.
This talk will look at some of the more modern approaches, much of it work still in progress. The motivation is to create visual and intuitive tools for designers, rather than analysts.
Recent innovations encompass some rather radical notions, such as performing origami on your position vectors, kirigami on your building frames, and tilting your trusses into the fourth dimension.
