Categorification is a word striking fear into the heart of many a mathematician. Perhaps this is because it seems to involve replacing lots of familiar things (like sets and vector spaces) with more abstract-looking categories. In this talk I’ll try to describe what categorification is, using several examples from algebra and geometry. If I have enough time I’ll explain how this comes up in my own research into characters of tilting modules.
