Abstract
Even before Florence Nightingale saved lives with pie charts, data has been used to inform life-changing decisions. Yet data cannot prove helpful if the data’s implications are not understood. The speakers will present two bodies of research in this seminar to inform how data in life science fields is shared with others to maximise understanding.
The first involves a quantitative study and synthesis of over 300 studies, resulting in standards that can be followed when reporting data. These standards were shown to improve people’s understanding of given data by up to 436%. The second study relates to building the capacity of data users. The Data-Informed Decision-Making Ecosystem, which is used at one of the largest school districts in the US. This will be summarised as a set of best practices for those in the life sciences to share their data with others.
