This talk takes a historical view – starting with the first proton –proton collider – the Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) – and discusses the big steps forward necessary in accelerator physics, superconducting magnet R&D, detector design, electronics, computing and general trends in collaboration organization that allowed us to discover the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012. The most recent Higgs results from the LHC will be presented as well as the latest hints of new physics.
