Vaccinia Virus and the Eradication of Smallpox

Abstract
Prof. Geoffrey Smith is the Head of the Department of Pathology as well as President of the International Union of Microbiological Societies and Chairman to the WHO Advisory Committee for Variola Virus (smallpox) Research.
His research focuses on vaccinia virus, the live vaccine that played a crucial role in the eradication of smallpox. Specifically, his lab look at the interplay between the host innate immune response and the vaccinia counter-attack.
Prof. Smith will be explaning his work into vaccinia virus and discussing his role as Chairman on The WHO Advisory Committee for Smallpox, as well as demonstarting how public health measures can be crucial in the eradication of disease.
The talk will be of particular interest to those of you studying BOD and Part II Pathology and for anyone interested in global and public health.
