Abstract
This paper examines British antislavery policy in the Indian Ocean in the second half of the nineteenth century, focusing on the lives of enslaved Africans who were liberated by the Royal Navy. The paper highlights contradictions of the anti-slave trade campaign in the Western Indian Ocean resulting from demands for political stability and the region’s economic dependence on slave labour.
