With fossil fuel reserves diminishing and concerns over climate change increasing, the hunt for alternative sources of energy is crucial. At CCFE , research is being carried out into a new source of energy – nuclear fusion. Fusion of hydrogen nuclei is the process that powers the Sun, and at CCFE in the European JET project, these processes are being replicated by heating Deuterium and Tritium to 200 million degrees C and employing powerful magnetic fields. JET leads the worldwide effort towards commercial fusion power and preparations for the next step international fusion device ITER . The first power stations should be starting up in the next 30 years.
