Abstract
“You are what you eat.” “It’s not what I eat, it’s all in my genes”. “Nature vs nurture”. These are all common statements that at one point or another we have probably all heard. I will take you on a quick journey that describes the steps taken to identify genes influencing certain diseases, known as complex diseases. I will use obesity (and diabetes) as examples of such diseases, and discuss how the interplay of genes and environment influences disease risk. I hope to dispel some common myths about obesity along the way…
