Abstract

Malaria continues to be one of the major global health concerns, with more than 200 million cases and 500,000 deaths every year. Mortality rates have recently started to decline due to the widespread distribution of insecticide treated bednets and new antimalarial drugs. However, these gains are under threat from the emergence and spread of drug resistant parasites and insecticide resistant mosquitoes. At the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, the Malaria Programme uses an array of high throughput techniques, from next generation sequencing to genome editing, to understand malaria biology and pathogenesis, and identify new drug and vaccine targets. The implications of these technologies for fields other than malaria, and the overall scope of work at the Sanger Institute, the home of the human genome, will also be discussed.
