Abstract
The idea that demons could harass, inflict illness on or internally possess human beings has been prominent among the ancient peoples of the Mediterranean and Near East from at least the fourth millennium BCE . Yet the conception of these creatures has varied dramatically, with Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek, Semitic, and early Christian cultures embodying both distinct traditions and considerable elements of cultural syncretism. This seminar will explore the myriad strands of thought and practice from which medieval theologians and clerics wove the fabric of medieval western demonology.
