Abstract
Many microorganisms swim, their motion biased by environmental stimuli (e.g. chemical gradients, light or fluid flow). As a result, fluids containing these tiny microswimmers behave peculiarly compared to passive colloidal suspensions. I will introduce the exciting new biophysics of these active fluids, drawing from my research on swimming bacteria and algae, currently inspired by problems in microbial ecology and biotechnology.
