Abstract
The recent Ebola outbreak showed how suddenly a deadly disease outbreak can spread. The 2011 film βContagionβ anticipates the spread of a fictitious global outbreak of disease, following medical researchers, public health officials, and the general public as they deal with a lethal infection. Discuss the reality and risks of infectious disease outbreaks with our panel of experts: Colin Russell, an epidemiologist and disease modeller from the Department of Veterinary Medicine who studies the global transmission of diseases, Sarah Caddy, a virologist from the Department of Pathology and recently returned from work in the Ebola treatment centre laboratory in Sierra Leone, and Tor Tarantola, from the Department of Psychology, who studies how people make moral judgements.
