In this talk, I will give an overview of the Astropy project, a community effort to develop a single core package for Astronomy in Python and foster interoperability between Python astronomy packages. This project has become the largest open-source project in Astronomy in the space of only a few years, having brought together over 150 contributors from many different countries. In addition to talking about available and planned functionality, I will talk about the process of how the project came into existence and has become sustainable, and the factors that have made such a collaboration possible. I will also talk more broadly about how the field of software development and data analysis in Astronomy is changing, and the implications these changes are having on how we think about career tracks within Science.
