Emerging solar cell technologies: a microscopist's view

Abstract
In the last few years solar photovoltaics have grown at a very fast pace, now representing a significant contribution to the overall electricity generation mix in several countries. Although most of the installed panels are still silicon-based, alternative technologies have become commercially competitive and show promise for the near future. In this talk I’ll focus on dye-sensitised and perovskite solar cells, which recently reached 20% power conversion efficiency, highlighting current limits and interesting scientific and engineering issues. In particular, I’ll give some examples on how electron microscopy can be used to tackle some of these issues.
