Abstract
On September 14, 2015 the two instruments of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) observed a gravitational wave transient that has been associated to the coalescence of a binary black hole. I will describe the history of the discovery, the physical properties that we have inferred about the source and the implications for our understanding of the underlying astrophysical population.
