Novel information is often remembered in relation to one’s existing world knowledge or schema. It is well known that our memory is better for information highly congruent with existing schemas but recent work also proposes a memory advantage when novel information conflicts with pre-existing knowledge, i.e., causing prediction errors (PE). I will present a series of behavioural and neuroimaging studies that investigate the mechanisms by which schemas influence different types of memory in humans and discuss the findings in the context of other memory theories.
