Increasing attention is being paid on stage at diagnosis as a measure of the performance of the public health and health care system. The Public Health Outcomes Framework reports proportion of cancer patients diagnosed in earlier stage for Local Authorities, while recent initiatives capture such information for CCGs. Evidence will be presented about to quantify the role of chance variation in these measures. Yoryos Lyratzopoulos will provide a 2-slide introduction on the broader context and project pre-history.
