Abstract

The discovery of exoplanets was one of the most revolutionary discoveries in human history, fundamentally changing humanity’s view of the universe and our place in it. Over the past two decades, scientists have largely focused on quantifying the abundance, mass and location of exoplanets. Now, however, scientists look beyond mass, radius and location towards a much more complex and informative scientific experiment; the characterisation of exoplanet atmospheres. The Twinkle Space Mission works to launch a small low-cost specialised telescope by 2019 that will provide unprecedented details of the atmospheres of hundreds of extrasolar planets, moving humanity towards the detailed understanding of planets beyond the eight in our solar system.
