New approaches to imaging angiogenesis and oxidative stress in living systems.

Abstract
Oxygen supply and demand in tumours are intricately linked with disease progression, particularly in hormone sensitive tissues such as the breast and prostate. At present, there are few non-invasive methods with which we can reveal the spatiotemporal distribution of this process non-invasively. In this talk, I will focus on the use of photoacoustic imaging to: track the formation of new blood vessels in tumours using the absorption of light by haemoglobin; and probe levels of oxidative stress in cancer cells using a targeted photoacoustic contrast agent. I will conclude with future perspectives on clinical translation of this emerging new technology.
