Large Animal Models For Retinal Gene Therapy

The eye has proven to be an excellent target organ for gene therapy. Vision loss in patients due to retinal degeneration can result from mutations in a large number of genes and there are now several clinical trials of gene therapy to treat some of these conditions. Comparable conditions due to spontaneous mutations in some of the orthologous genes have been identified in companion animal species such as dog and cat. Retinal gene therapy in some of these large animal models has been key in the preclinical development necessary prior to clinical trials.
