Abstract
I will present work on the potential for transient growth in the linear perturbation of current sheets. The non-normal character of resistive MHD allows for transient growth that is excluded in the standard normal-mode analysis. If transient effects can sufficiently change the rate of energy growth at the onset of the tearing instability, a much faster evolution may be possible. This result could have important consequences for flares and the onset of eruptive solar phenomena, such as coronal mass ejections.
