Abstract
The widespread development of antibiotic resistant bacterial generated an increasing interest in the use of alternate therapies for treatment of infected wounds. The honey effects: anti-bacterial on wounds susceptible to infections, anti-oxidant activity that reduces the high concentration of free radicals and reactive oxygen produced in the inflammatory stage. The anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous and exudative activity reduces pain, edema and exudation of wounds, debridement of necrotic tissue stimulating the formation of healthy granulation tissue, stimulates wound contraction favoring wound closure, and shows healing properties that minimize appearance. We examine the chemical and physical properties role of honey on wound healing.
