Abstract

Traditional western approaches to obesity include blaming individuals for their ‘gluttony & sloth’ – ridicule and judgement of those with such ‘obvious’ differences. In the 1990’s select medical biochemistry and genetic research followed, showing some cytokine (eg leptin) effects on energy – fat metabolism, energy sensing and appetite control. Emphases switched to commodity technology (commodotech)-based medical research (chemical/machine/electronics) & practice (pharmaceuticals/devices). Human evolutionary, ecological biology reveals drives to acquire energy plus specific requirements for plant-food micronutrition for healthy development & longevity. Enough real scientific evidence means politics of commodotech profits verses human and environmental health is the issue to address.
