‘Xenotransplantation: pigs in space?’

Abstract
In order to prevent the possibility of transmission of the porcine endogenous retrovirus (PERV) from pigs to humans during clinical xenotransplantation, we are investigating the potential for recombination of defective PERV in pigs that might lead to the re-creation of replication competent viruses capable of infecting human cells. We also aim to establish an extra level of safety within the clinical application of xenotransplantation, by investigating previously proven and novel molecular methods towards inhibiting PERV viral expression in the transplanted porcine tissues.
