Abstract
In contrast to the usual assumption that trade unions were the product of capitalism and industrialisation, this talk traces their origins back to the pre-industrial craft guilds. A liberal-pluralist view of trade unions is then outlined, advocating collective organisation and collective bargaining as ends in themselves rather than stepping stones to state-socialism.
