Reduction of turbulent wall-friction by rotating discs

Abstract
The effects of flush-mounted rotating discs beneath turbulent channel flows are studied numerically. The focus is on the substantial turbulent drag reduction achieved for specified disc diameter and tip velocity. The energy budget is investigated, taking into the power spent by the discs, and thereby computing the net power saved. A particular different disc arrangement leads to the striking result that the drag reduction increases if the number of discs is halved. We will further discuss freely rotating discs for which the disc motors are switched off and the wall turbulence determines their dynamics.
