A Control Systems Perspective on Supercapacitor Modelling and Design
- 👤 Speaker: Ross Drummond, University of Oxford
- 📅 Date & Time: Thursday 09 February 2017, 14:00 - 15:00
- 📍 Venue: Cambridge University Engineering Department, LR12
Abstract
This talk summarises some recent results on the use of control theory to improve our understanding of the modelling and design of electrochemical energy storage devices known as supercapacitors. Due to their high power densities, supercapacitors are becoming an increasingly popular method for storing electrical energy and have been successfully applied in areas such as hybrid power systems and the grid. A model based upon the device electrochemistry is first analysed in detail before the synthesis of low-order equivalent circuits from this electrochemical model is discussed. Then, the problem of design is considered and framed in a local absolute stability framework. Finally, conditions are given to relax positivity of the terms of a candidate Lyapunov function for such a system.
