When designing systems, it is useful to understand the people who will be using them. Cognitive psychology provides a helpful perspective, characterising aspects of the human mind, such as attention, memory, perception, learning and problem-solving. In this lecture I will discuss some of these aspects and how being aware of them can help us design more usable interfaces. I will illustrate each topic with examples of usable and problematic designs.
