Giving What We Can: Cambridge, Just Love Cambridge and the Cambridge Buddhist Society are delighted to host Fran Day, who will draw on her personal experiences to discuss the relationship between religious faith and giving to effective charities.

Many religions give a clear call for the rich to give their money, going as far as encouraging the rich to sell their positions to obtain more money to donate. Globally speaking, we are the rich, but we oftentime neglect this radical giving when we practice our religion. Fran will discuss these issues, drawing on her experience with the Giving What We Can community as well as her personal faith. She will explore how we can challenge ourselves to give more to charity, how we might decide which charities to give to, and how we can balance global and local needs with personal faith.

Fran is finishing her PhD in theoretical physics at Oxford. She has been a Christian for five years and a member of Giving What We Can for three. Her research involves using X-ray telescope observations to search for signals from new particles. She is also a stand-up comedian, and last August took her solo show Physics Fan Fiction to the Edinburgh Fringe. Fran will be moving to Cambridge in October to take up a Junior Research Fellowship at Peterhouse.
