Abstract
A SpatialOS simulation consists of many “worker” processes, each of which can see and update a subset of the world. Workers may be written in any language, and a single simulation might contain workers written in several languages, with each simulating a different aspect of the world, e.g. one worker might be computing rigid body physics while another is doing route finding. As well as coordinating the workers, SpatialOS handles some of the tricky parts of building a distributed system such as persistence, load balancing, fault tolerance and state synchronisation. SpatialOS is in active development, but is already being used in production for a few large, open world games and simulations to answer “what if” questions about the real world.
