Abstract
In this session, I will present the findings of my Masters project on tall modular buildings, completed as part of the Future Infrastructure and Built Environment Centre for Doctoral Training. Modular buildings are constructed from room-sized compartments made in a factory and assembled on site. Their off-site nature can help accommodate population increase in cities, if the modular buildings can be extended to high-rise. In this project, I aimed to find the structural height limits of stacked towers of steel modules. I considered different steel module topologies and both ultimate and serviceability limit states. I proceeded to find the height at failure of each modular tower, and presented the data obtained in the style of Ashby Charts. The charts revealed some unintuitive results, which I will discuss during the session.
