Abstract
Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is the theory that describes how the fundamental building blocks of matter – quarks and gluons – are bound together to make protons and neutrons. I will describe this theory and how it can help us to understand matter in the world around us as well as exotic matter that was formed in the early universe, fractions of a second after the big bang. Numerical simulations play a crucial role in QCD and I will discuss why and how the world’s most powerful supercomputers are used to understand the properties of matter.
