Towards seamlessly integrated geometric design and simulation using distance fields

Abstract
In industrial practice geometry models are first created with computer-aided design (CAD) and then discretised with a boundary-conforming mesh for finite element analysis (FEA). The discretisation process is costly, error-prone and is becoming a bottleneck with increasing complexity of engineering products. In this talk, we will introduce a novel immersed/embedded finite element technique based on implicit distance field representations. The distance field is used for both describing the geometry and enforcing the boundary conditions during the simulation. This approach effectively eliminates the complex mesh generation procedure. Our ongoing work in immersed methods aims to increase their efficiency and accuracy when applied to complex industrial geometries with fine geometrical detail and freeform organic shapes. To demonstrate the benefits of the proposed approach several solid and fluid mechanics simulations will be presented.
