Abstract
Bose-Einstein condensation is an amazing physical phenomenon. At the same time, at least for the non-interacting case that Einstein worked with, it’s only “balls in boxes’. In joint work with Chatterjee and Soundararajan, we treat the problem using number-theoretic partition theory. Our work gives new results about the size and shape of the condensate below the critical temperature. They work for very general potentials and raise new questions for the spectral theory of Schrödinger operators. Finally they show that a mainstay of statistical physics, “equivalence of ensembles”, is pretty slippery business. This is an expository talk, no physics knowledge presupposed. After all, it’s only balls in boxes.
The talk will be followed by a wine reception in the Central Core, CMS .
