Abstract
Back in the eighteenth century, almost everybody would have known about the ”longitude problem”, the biggest scientific question of the day. Many mariners, lacking the ability to measure longitude, were lost as soon as they lost sight of land. Thousands of lives and fortunes were lost.
The quest for the solution occupied scientists for a very long time. In the end it was John Harrison who found the solution, thanks to his “sea-going clock.”
Series This talk is part of the John Harrison and the solution of the Longitude problem series.
