PRaVDA project for Proton Computed Tomography

The use of proton radiotherapy to treat cancers of the head and neck, particularly in paediatrics, is rapidly increasing around the world. Over the next few years two NHS sites, and many other private facilities, will offer proton radiotherapy in the UK. In order to accurately deliver the dose to the tumour, the stopping powers, and location, of body tissues needs to be known with high precision. The PRaVDA Consortium have designed, built, and tested a fully solid state device which will allow a proton Computed Tomography image to be acquired. We will highlight the benefits of proton therapy and the need for proton imaging, describe our device, and present results from recent tests using the iThemba LABS proton therapy clinical beam line in SA.
