Searching for space-time variations in fundamental constants provides an important test of grand unification theories. Recent quasar measurements hint at a possible spatial dependence of the fine structure constant over cosmological distance scales. I will discuss the current status of this and describe how we aim to make the first 1000 measurements of varying alpha at high redshift. Such a large survey is made possible by the application of Artificial Intelligence methods for automated spectral analysis, that also reduce systematics, and remove any possible human bias in the results.
