Abstract
Cell adhesion to the extracellular matrix governs virtually every aspect of cell behaviour. Integrins are the main cell adhesion receptors capable of triggering activation of downstream signalling pathways and enabling cells to sense the stiffness of their microenvironment. Force transmission to the cellular cytoskeleton triggers mechanochemical signalling influencing cell proliferation, gene expression and cell morphology. In my seminar I will describe how matrix stiffness regulates epigenetics and transcription in cancer cells and how mechanical coupling of the cytoskeleton to matrix is essential for maintenance of pluripotency in hPSC.
