Unconventional Order in some Framework Materials

Abstract
This talk will explore some of the unusual phase behaviour of framework materials – including hybrid perovskite analogues – driven by ordering of molecular degrees of freedom. Two specific examples to be covered are an incommensurate chirality density wave state and a structural analogue of Lieb’s square ice phase. The relevance of direction-dependent interaction models (including a classical Kitaev-like formalism) to the structural complexity of framework materials will be discussed in general terms, before exploring the connection between strongly-correlated structural disorder in these systems and various cooperative phenomena. The talk will conclude with a study of Prussian Blue analogues, where strong geometric frustration leads to an unexpectedly complex phase behaviour characterised by “hidden” polymorphism.
