Abstract
Load-displacement solutions for piles and shallow foundations based on deformation fields and energy conservation
Abstract: An energy approach for the prediction of nonlinear foundation behaviour will be presented. The approach is essentially a variant of the mobilisable strength design (MSD) method. However, unlike the MSD method in which the displacement field is constant, in the presented approach it changes throughout the loading sequence. The formulation entails three main stages: [1] assumption of admissible pattern functions from which displacement fields can be assembled, [2] equating external work to internal work, and [3] minimization of internal work by variation of the displacement field using the different pattern functions. The approach is demonstrated on two problems: 1) a vertically loaded shallow foundation, and 2) laterally loaded piles.
Another variant of the MSD method, entailing a simple nonlinear scaling scheme of stress-strain curves for the solution of laterally loaded piles, will also be presented.
