Physical controls on the location and initiation of a regular phytoplankton bloom north of the Crozet Plateau

Abstract
Iron is released into the surface waters around the Crozet Plateau (50°E, 46°S) through natural processes. This alleviates the main control on phytoplankton in the Southern Ocean and causes a large phytoplankton bloom. My PhD involved studying this through remotely sensed data, Argo float trajectories and profiles and in situ cruise data as part of the CROZEX program. After a review of the importance of iron in the Southern Ocean, the difficulties of measuring it and previous artificial release experiments I will present results relating the circulation, iron supply and light availability to the spatial structure and temporal development of the bloom.
