Abstract
Fab labs are field laboratories that bring fabrication capabilities to various parts of the world, particularly to under served communities. Labs around the world are used for invention, design, craft, technology education, small business creation and personal expression in communities from South Africa to the north of Norway.
Each lab is outfitted with high-precision computer controlled cutting machines, an electronics workbench and manual tools. These can be used to make
- small structures and parts out of card board, plywood or acrylic,
- circuit boards with programmable micro controllers,
- large scale (house-sized) structures out of metal and plywood,
- molds for plastic or rubber parts.
The talk will take the form of a show and tell. I’ll relate some of my personal experiences in the lab, show many photos from the past 2 years and talk about Fab 4—the latest global meeting of fab lab users in Chicago.
Series This talk is part of the Inference Group series.
